When you create a product with a unique, attractive visual appearance, design registration ensures competitors can't simply copy your look. Under the Designs Act, 2000, design registration provides exclusive rights to the aesthetic features of products.
What is Design Registration?
Design registration protects the visual or ornamental features of a product — features that appeal to the eye but aren't functional. Specifically, it covers:
- Shape
- Configuration
- Pattern
- Ornamentation
- Composition of colors or lines
- Or combination of these
...as applied to any article, judged solely by the eye in the finished state.
Key Distinction: Design protects HOW it LOOKS. Patent protects HOW it WORKS. Trademark protects WHO MAKES IT (brand). All three can apply to the same product.
